Do You Still Need a CCW Permit in Florida?

Since July 1, 2023, qualifying adults may carry a concealed firearm in Florida without a license. Eligibility and location restrictions still apply. A Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License can still be useful, but it does not replace training or legal judgment.

A Florida Concealed Weapon License gives you:

  • Possible recognition in other states, subject to each state’s current laws and restrictions.
  • Exemption from Florida’s mandatory waiting period when purchasing a firearm under Section 790.0655(2)(a), Florida Statutes.
  • A seven-year state credential after FDACS reviews the complete application and background check
  • A credential that some other states recognize, subject to their current restrictions

A license does not guarantee legality in every location or situation. Check FDACS and the law of each destination state before carrying or traveling with a firearm.

What the Training Covers

Both courses include live-fire instruction and training documentation for a Florida CWL application. FDACS determines whether an applicant meets all licensing requirements. Course content includes:

  • Florida use-of-force law and Castle Doctrine
  • Safe storage and handling requirements
  • Concealed carry legal responsibilities
  • Live-fire firearm competency demonstration
  • Application process and documentation

The 4-hour course goes deeper on decision-making, defensive scenarios, and drawing from concealment.

How to Apply for Your Florida CWL After Training

After the course, Stephen Cohen provides a training certificate that documents firearm competency. Apply through FDACS online, in person, or by mail. Required materials vary by application method; follow FDACS’s current photo, fingerprint, identification, training-document, and fee instructions.  FDACS has up to 90 days after receiving a complete application to issue or deny a license.

  • FDACS currently accepts applications from adults age 18 or older who meet all other eligibility requirements.
