Firearm Fundamentals training in Miami

Introduction

Every skill in defensive shooting rests on a foundation: the fundamentals. Without a solid stance, a strong grip, proper sight alignment, and disciplined trigger control, every other skill will fail when it matters most. At Tactical U, we teach the building blocks of pistol and rifle marksmanship so you can shoot accurately, safely, and with confidence under pressure. These fundamentals are not optional, they are the baseline for every class that follows.

The Seven Core Shooting Fundamentals

Stance

Your base of stability. Use your bone structure over muscle to create a balanced, athletic stance. This allows you to manage recoil, maintain mobility, and recover quickly for follow‑up shots.

Grip

High on the pistol frame with 360‑degree hand contact, applying approximately a 70/30 pressure balance (support hand providing the majority of control). A strong, consistent grip reduces muzzle rise and ensures reliable follow‑up shots.

  • Pistol: Full hand contact with proper wrist alignment.

  • Rifle: Firm mount under the eye (not buried in the shoulder pocket) with a consistent cheek weld, firing hand positioned securely on the controls, and the support hand stabilizing the fore‑end.

Sight Picture

What you see when your aligned sights are placed on the target.

  • Iron Sights: Clear focus on the front sight with the target slightly blurred.

  • Red Dot Optics: Maintain focus on the target, superimposing the dot over your point of aim.

Sight Alignment

The precise relationship between the front and rear sights. Even a minor misalignment can send rounds off target — especially critical with pistols due to the shorter sight radius.

Breathing

Controlled breathing prevents tension and steadies your aim. Use natural respiratory pause for best stability without over‑holding your breath under stress.

Trigger Control

A smooth, straight press to the rear — not a jerk or slap. Follow with a proper trigger reset to maintain accuracy and speed. Correct trigger control is the single most decisive factor between a hit and a miss in defensive shooting.

Follow‑Through

Maintain sight picture, grip, and trigger discipline through the shot and immediately afterward. Don’t drop the gun or lift your head to “check.” Stay ready for the next shot and in control of your weapon.

Rifle vs. Pistol Fundamentals

Shotgun Note: Shotgun fundamentals follow the same universal principles, with added emphasis on mount and recoil management. These are covered in detail in our Private and Group Tactical Shotgun courses.

Why Fundamentals Fail Under Stress

On the square range, fundamentals seem easy. Under stress, however, poor grip, a rushed trigger press, or failure to control breathing quickly lead to missed shots. You will not rise to the occasion — you will fall back to your training. Repetition under qualified instruction is the only way to make these skills automatic when you need them most.

Master them, repeat them, and never abandon them under stress. At Tactical U, we don’t just teach you to shoot — we build the habits that make you effective when it matters most.
