Florida does not require a gun safety course to buy or own a firearm. Training is required only if you apply for a concealed weapon license. A good safety course is still the best first step for a new owner, because the mistakes that hurt people happen long before anyone needs a license.
What Florida law requires, and what it does not
There is no general state requirement to complete a firearm safety course in order to buy or own a gun in Florida. Training enters the picture when you apply for the state concealed weapon license: the law requires proof of training and that an instructor personally observe you safely handle and fire a firearm with live ammunition (Florida Statutes, section 790.06).
Since July 2023, eligible adults may also carry concealed without a license, so even that training is now a choice (see this WFSU report). Our guide to the Florida concealed carry permit explains what the license still adds.
The practical point: the law does not make you take a gun safety course. Your own safety, and everyone else’s in your home, is the reason to take one.
What a good gun safety course covers
A useful course teaches habits, not trivia. At minimum it should cover:
- The four universal rules of firearm safety, with demonstration and real-world application (our summary of the four rules).
- Muzzle and trigger discipline, including why “safe direction” depends on where you are.
- Safely checking and clearing a pistol, a revolver, a rifle and a shotgun.
- Safe transfer between people: action open, chamber visible, verbal confirmation.
- Correct ammunition use, including markings and the hazards of mismatched ammunition.
- Drugs, alcohol and medication as absolute disqualifiers for handling a firearm.
- Safe storage and access control: safes, lock boxes and quick-access systems, and keeping children and intruders away from firearms.
- How stress changes behavior: tunnel vision, auditory exclusion, and fight, flight or freeze.

Who should take one
New firearm owners, of course. Also anyone preparing for concealed carry training, families who keep a firearm in the home and want to secure it properly, and experienced owners who want a refresher from a professional.
Online or in person?
Both work, for different reasons. Our online beginner gun safety course is a live two-hour session with an instructor, not a recorded video, and you do not need a firearm for it. It suits a new owner who wants the foundation first. An in-person class adds hands-on feedback, which is why many students take the safety course first and then a range class. If your goal is the license, the next step is a qualifying class such as our 2-hour CCW certification course, and the walkthrough in What to Expect in a Florida Concealed Carry Class shows how it runs.
How to choose a gun safety course
- Is the instructor live? A recorded video cannot answer your question or correct your handling.
- Who teaches it, and what is their background? Ask for it.
- Does it cover storage and transfer, not only the four rules?
- Is there real practice, or only slides?
- What do you leave with? Notes, a plan for what to learn next, and someone you can ask afterward.
